Confused by the lore of the game.

I you by "many" exiles mean all the players, then sure there might be a bit too many exiles to logically fit with the scale of Oriath. However, we don't know what Oriath really is. Theopolis might be an island outside a bigger land mass, or that island might be densely populated. For example, the current population of Australia is 23 million while the current population of UK is 64 million, even though Australia's land mass is many times bigger.

What I can gather from the wiki (http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/History_of_Wraeclast), Oriath seems to be a colony of "The Empire" which we can assume is allegorical to UK (a place further away).

It is not that the lore is illogical, it is more that we are ignorant of the lore as it is only fed to us in small small snippets in the game.

I see, this reasonong is something I can deal with, thanks. If what Oriath really is hasn't been revealed yet, then I'm fine with the plot. Perhap's Oriath island is part of a bigger political entity which doesn't show up in the map.

I just started today with the game so I didn't know. I thought there would be already an explanation for what I asked, but I guess we'll have to wait to know what really Oriath and the rest of the world is.

No. The Empire they're referring to is the Eternal Empire that once existed on Wraeclast. They were the ones that built Sarn and Fellshrine and such. After Wraeclast blew up, the only Imperial territory left was Oriath, so that became the new capital. It's an exact reversal of Australian history. Instead of the tiny island empire colonizing the large hellish continent, the Empire began on Wraeclast and colonized the island. I'm sure some parallels to New Zealand are also intended.
First time I really took a look at the map. damn thats alot of content for us to explore if they are true to the 10 acts in 10 years. Im sure Ill be still around that time since the game changes drastically on every patch (nerf) you need to find a way to cope with the existing meta or quit.

If this is how the plot goes (I'm new to the game so I still don't know), I just hope then Oriath island is way bigger than it looks in the map, and that Oriath is like a medieval Taiwan or something like that. xD

I didn't know Oriath Island had been colonized by inhabitants of Wraeclast, and that Oriath was somehow "protected" from a cataclysm (of some kind?). This way I can understand the demographic and territorial imbalances, thanks for the info.

If Oriath had had more cities written on the map or mentioned, I would have related it to the UK-Australia thing, Orieth just didn't seem to me as populated as the UK was. Maybe I was wrong.
MaraWuti is right. Oriath is the only civilization left because it is an island. The Empire(s) that covered mainland Wraeclast were destroyed in the cataclysm. Thats why everywhere you go is ruined and over run with wildlife, the only professionally organized group you encounter are Blackguards from Oriath. Its a post apocalyptic world, the ashes of an empire, figuring out what caused that apocalypse is the direction the game seems to be flowing in.
I love all you people on the forums, we can disagree but still be friends and respect each other :)
