You won't have to itemize for 165% chaos resistance, and you won't take any chaos damage, ever. You will be able to run certain abilities/keystones/combos that are much more difficult in a life based build (such as Bloodrage, which inflicts 4% life per second in damage for a massive dps buff and frenzy generation).

ok ye i can understand that, but what about melee hits? wont they be insane high on a build like this?
Don't get hit.
CI is a trade off...it isn't a "direct benefit" node.

The skill tree (forest) has three types of nodes:

* Minor Buffs: Purely beneficial, provides a small bonus.

* Major Buffs: Purely beneficial, provides a large bonus, typically has Minor Buff Nodes to acquire beforehand.

* Keystones: Fundamentally changes game play, provides a new facet to build around. Not always purely beneficial.

All of the Keystones present a drastic, major change in the way your character functions, which opens up potentially beneficial (and sometimes broken) builds.

For instance, Vaal's Pact combined with a large HP pool and a huge life steal % will provide constant, non-stop, near limitless instant healing...but only when you're attacking things. You can no longer run away, hide in a corner, and pop a flask to heal to full.

There are a few "pure benefit" keystones, such as Arrow Dodging, which provide only a buff with no drawbacks. However, these typically don't fundamentally change the game.

Chaos Inoculation is a game changer. It provides a huge difficulty shift, in that all normal enemies are potentially harder (low life) while chaos enemies are trivially easy now. It also takes away options, and forces you to focus purely on ES instead of HP/ES.

It isn't "SUPER GOOD", it's just a game changer that some folks can maximize.
Just a simple list of the major +'s

-No more worrying about Chaos damage, so you take no Life nodes and can focus purely on a single aspect (Energy Shield). Focusing builds is typically a good thing. Also, not having to spec for Chaos resists in your gear/skill tree is a big bonus - it means your gear can be focused on other +'s.

-Blood Rage. The 4% of life lost per second is now null & void so you can now use this skill with 0 drawbacks and gain a huge DPS boost.

-No more Life Potions. You no longer have a need for them and you can therefore have more of the other available potions slotted.

-ES has natural regen outside of combat, so if you can do a barrel roll and escape, you can be back up to full more quickly.
Hopefully this thread is still alive...

My question pertains to using Ghost Reaver with Vaal Pact and Blood Drinker to supplement Chaos Inoculation. If Ghost Reaver sends all life leech to ES wouldn't this be a viable way to make sure your ES is always healthy? Then I could save life node points and just go for elemental resists and high ES stats.

Would love to know what the community thinks about this. Still fairly new to this game so your input is appreciated.

p.s. If Ghost Reaver/Vaal/Blood Drinker makes no sense in tandem with CI (and I want CI) then should I just stay close on the Shadow side of the tree and grab Phase/Acrobatics?
I will list benefits and cons.

pros
1. blood rage
2. always full life (can use gems like melee on full life)
3. immunity to chaos damage= no need to worry about chaos resist gears.
4. being able to use certain items without any drawbacks like eye of chayula
5. No need for life flasks

cons
1. pretty much fixed on using diciplane aura
2. pretty much useless for 2-handed or bow builds due to how shield is needed.
3. can get stun locked and are vulnerable to status effects
4. can not regenerate shield quickly compared to life regeneration.
5. doesnt increase the number of ES per level unlike life.
6. can not recover energy shield with flasks.
7. forced to use vaal pact and ghost reaver.

I think having ghost reaver and vaal pact is must for ci, I think its more of waste of points compared to life builds, since you HAVE to get vaal pact, ghost reaver, ci and the amount of poitns spent on doing that will really make you limit dps and other things.

Pretty much agree with the above but would like to add on.

I have a crit cold CI witch. I can perma freeze (most stuffs and face tank them with life leech/ GR) being surrounded by extra damage bears still kills me though.

Adding to below
pros
1. blood rage
2. always full life (can use gems like melee on full life)
3. immunity to chaos damage= no need to worry about chaos resist gears.
4. being able to use certain items without any drawbacks like eye of chayula
5. No need for life flasks, you should go for crit plus charge/ graphite flasks. this will give you huge armor contiunously
6. You do not need +life/ +chaos resist items which are very expensive =/
7. If you are range, GR/ VP is optional.

cons
1. pretty much fixed on using diciplane aura
2. pretty much useless for 2-handed or bow builds due to how shield is needed (not true because with good es chest armor will already give you around 4k ES.)
3. can get stun locked and are vulnerable to status effects, this is a major drawback. you need eye of chayula.
4. can not regenerate shield quickly compared to life regeneration. I find that shield regenerate faster than life once you are out of battle. 3 sec is all you need to let the shield get back in shape.
5. doesnt increase the number of ES per level unlike life.
6. can not recover energy shield with flasks. this is extremely critical, the panic you face when you got hit to low health with a fast monster chasing you when you cant use pots... painful. you need quick MS boots. its a must so that you can run while wait for the Cooldown.
7. forced to use vaal pact and ghost reaver. (if you are range, i feel that its optional)

You WILL need leech(even if you are ranged), due to the fact that there are reflect mobs.
