Offline Mode? Why or Why Not

I recall someone saying that the game was built around the use of servers, and that having an offline mode would make it easier to hack, because people would need access to the full game code to run it off their machines.

That's arguably true, but it isn't likely to stop dupers and hackers. They will make themselves known at some point in the near future. Farmers as well. PoE is a perfect target. I can understand why they would go to such lengths to make it as hard as possible for these people to do what they do, but they're still going to do it.

Ultimately however GGG lacks the resources to remove such actions from the game entirely, at least not in the default ladder (unless they start wiping). That was always the case with D2 as well. Non-ladder was rife with dupes and such, ladders less so. The Default ladder is basically non-ladder, once the initial race is over, so I imagine we'll see some of it going on there.

I wouldn't want to actively broach the topic with them directly however. It's all very cloak and dagger. We can presume they are aware of it, and we can presume they have a plan to deal with it (it probably revolves around damage control and mitigation, more so than wiping it out). That might be a good thing, however: there is a large minority of people that played Diablo 2 specifically because they could buy items and the like. Not condoning it, of course; just point that out ;P
MOAR PANTS, because every good game needs a pointless meme.
