Well, it's still "only 850 EX" so the post is ex-aggerated (see what I did here?). However the fact is holding any EX is not a good idea, inflation is real.

Exalts did hold their value surprisingly long this season tho, considering one mod went to desecration (so you didn't sink exalts on it). Then 0.3.1 hit and the inflation went like 100% in a week... wonder why.
Yup, it's like holding Cash versus holding Gold and Silver. Your Cash is CONSTANTLY losing value. You want to roll your wealth into something that holds value, only converting to Cash when you plan to spend it and it's not worth it to just trade/barter w/ your Gold and Silver.

I was surprised exalts held on so long, as well! I think the alch change was a factor, but mostly I suspect it's the really hardcore top-enders (and botters) who megajuiced their maps in anticipation of 0.3.1 and are running double-juiced content as if hell was going out of sale.
I don't even mind. I just hope they keep making content updates/changes like this as soon as possible instead of only every new league. I wanna see this game DEVELOP.
Don't get lost by being so focused on the target that you forget to enjoy your surroundings.
There also is much less use for notmal exalts since there are better versions, and from some point on people will only use greater and perfect ones. And if all the exalts get traded around without any sink, this happens

the game is dead?

Technically, yes. Every league has its lifecycle where the majority of the playerbase slowly evaporates, leaving the economy in a broken state. At the time of 0.3.1, this had already started to happen, and .3.1 did not help the process. What’s happening now is not unique.

If anything, because of the new trade system, this is the first league where the economy is still alive!

Just try to play POE1 now! With no players, it's tough. Buying a specific unique or rare item is literally impossible because no sellers are online. Now, with the asynchronous trade system, you can still play with a "dead" economy where uniques and other things are still available, albeit at highly inflated prices.

However, many build-enabling uniques and early-game leveling gear are extremely cheap.

So, I would argue that because of the new trade system, the league will never truly be dead. Instead, it will linger in a zombie state, which is still playable.
Sucks for new players trying to play this game. Good items dont drop. Crafting costs too much. Economy is broken by inflation. Cant even come close to finishing a build bc it costs 1000 Divines and i get 1 Divine every 10 hours of playing.

Cant even level up bc 1 death costs too much and bosses 1 shot you with anything.

Have to spend hours mapping to a citadel only to get 1 shot and not be able to replay the map. Be nice if it was possible to improve my character but without hundreds of divine orbs, its not possible. Game progression hit a wall.
The exalts are being used to add item mods. This this the only way they are being consumed in the game. THE ONLY. The demand for the items is satisfied with the time in league, so less people do craft items, since no one is buying your stuff. This is the reason why exchange ratio early in league is like 50ex, even less at some point. And almost completely worthless late in league.

So the exalts is not the type of currency you want to pick up right now. Pick up the divines you have dropped instead.
