Why are our expectations so high, and why are players angry today?

Expectation are so high because this is a company that made Path of Exile 1, a masterpiece of a game that got so many things right for an ARPG. People are disappointed because this same company worked 7 years on a game where amnesia seems to hit on the regular, unlearning what they've learned from their masterpiece.

Was going to say this, but, you were first. And did it eloquently.

While I find some messages a bit too harsh or aggressive, I’m still one of the players currently frustrated with the state of the game. I want to share a few points of context that I believe are important and help explain the level of expectations I personally have for the game.

POE1 was on a fast track toward greatness. The last patches brought a ton of quality-of-life improvements while maintaining strong build diversity and increasingly deep crafting mechanics. Alternate gems, the three Atlas trees, the easier respec system, Alva trade—these were all great additions that hinted at an incredible future for the game. But the pause has been… a bit too long.

We showed up in full force and gave massive support at the launch of POE2 0.1—with over 500,000 players on Steam alone, insane streaming numbers, and YouTube videos all over the place. The kind of hype and numbers this game achieved are beyond what 95% of studios could even dream of for their titles.

But 0.1 lasted 21 weeks, which in the world of modern ARPGs feels like a small eternity. That long of a wait only raised expectations for 0.2 even higher—players figured something that took so long to cook had to be amazing. But the end result was far from perfect.

Those 21 weeks of 0.1 were also a time for players and content creators to give tons of constructive feedback. Many topics were raised, but the most common expectations could be summed up as:

A more stable game and server experience than 0.1—because if you can’t even play properly, it’s hard to enjoy anything else.

A smoother and shorter campaign (not asking for a speedrun here), with more regular and linear character progression, and less bloated acts.

Truly new endgame content (not dozens of new encounters—just one or two well-designed things to do would be great).

A healthy build diversity and balance (adjust the strong builds from 0.1 without deleting them, lift up the weak ones, and avoid adding anything completely broken).

Loot and crafting systems that allow every player to get at least a few high-tier items during the league.

A slight increase in game speed for all classes/ascendancies—not zoom-zoom POE1 levels, just a better sense of flow and speed to match enemy pacing.

From my perspective, if I had to rate each of these points out of 10, I’d give all of them a mediocre score… And the “quick fixes” patched between April 7th and 20th—while positive—mostly gave me the impression that nothing was truly ready after 21 weeks of 0.1, and that the devs are just plugging holes wherever the ship is leaking.

Personally, I’m still going to support the game and I’m excited for what’s next—but I think it’s fair to say that this league has been disappointing given the expectations, and I really hope we see a meaningful shift in direction moving forward.

Peace

Because game developers are lying about their game in pre release hype videos.

When game is released and people find out its NOTHING what game devs said its gonna be , ofc people are going to be pissed.

As simple as that.

This game was promised to be newbie friendly, slower pace , this and that.

3 days into release, there were builds that oneshot 3 screen of mobs in 0.2 sec.

Game butchers your resistances starting from act 3 normal.

Few OP classes/ascendancies that makes other ascendancies/classes literally useless and pointless to play.

Horrible ascendancy trials that are in no way shape or form ''newbie friendly''

Horrible class/spec design. On one side you have class that can kill uber t4 boss in 0.4 seconds , on another side you have class that requires you to do 5 sec skill combination in order to kill white mob.

Non existent loot. 0 currency 0 upgrades if you don't stack rarity find , and some classes/specs cant afford to do so.

Non optimized game. Goo luck running ritual-breach-delirium-expedition (4in1) maps. Unless you have high end PC , you wont be able to do it.

Horrible trading system with price fixing , people not replying because they are busy , rmt .

Warrior , the worst class design ever .

Minion builds , something so praised in PoE2 hype (lie) videos , turns out to be horribly designed minions who get stuck in corners, behind invisible walls, dying in 1 white mob hit regardless of dmg reductions etc...

Non existent dot build (one of core builds in any arpg) Sure , you can play chaos build , but good luck surviving mobs that instantly jump on you regardless of how far they were when you engaged them. They could be 3 screens away , when you engage them, they are on top of you in 0.1 second.

Curse delay activation , when you have to spam dodge roll (which is most of time) you cant cast curses because of delayed activation.

Dodge roll based game. Horrible, horrible , horrible system. This was supposed to be ARPG game.

PoE1 was fluke , one in million. GGG thought they have knowledge to make better game , turns out they don't. They don't know what this game wants to be.

Jonathan says Huntress wasn't supposed to be played in a way everyone plays her. According to him , you were supposed to deal damage every 10 seconds , in ARPG game...

Compare Warrior and Monk . One attacks 5x in 1 second , another attacks 1x in 5 seconds. And ye, Monk in previous patch was oneshotting screen of mobs in 0.1 second , Warrior ... didn't.

This is not ARPG , ARPG game is a game where you are rewarded based on time investment , game in which you have actually CHANCE to get good loot. In PoE2 you don't , unless you glitch, cheat or rmt.
Haha,

They're angry because that's the demo.

Emotional maturity doesn't seem to be prominent in the vocal portion.
Expectations were set high from the beginning because they bombarded us with tons of hype about having all this new content, teasing features that still aren't available, and then released the early access with less than half of the content they were hyping everyone up about.
This is exactly the problem I have with PoE2 as well. It pretends to offer thousands of build options and an high amount of skills, but in reality, about 95 percent of those skills are completely useless, especially in the late game where they are not viable at all. Just look at the fact that over 35 percent of players use the Huntress with Lightning Spear and more than 15 percent play the Amazon with Bow. If that is not proof of fake build diversity, then what is?

The issue is not that two or three insanely strong builds do five million damage while the others only deal one million but are still able to handle the late game. No. The real problem is that most normal builds barely do enough damage to clear tier ten maps, let alone bosses like the Arbiter or Xesht.

In PoE1 you can literally play anything. Even if you do not have the strongest build, you can still get very powerful and complete all content. You may be a bit slower and you might die sometimes, but you can do everything.

In PoE2, if you are not using one of the top meta builds, you are done. Maybe not right away, maybe you can still reach tier ten, but anything above tier sixteen or any of the big bosses will be completely out of reach.

What should GGG do? It is actually very simple.

First of all, let us get more currency. Yes, I get it, you do not want to spoil the players. Currency should be something you earn and work for. I agree. But it is not fun to get just two divines for the entire campaign from act one to six. Sure, items that cost twenty divines right now will go up to forty or sixty, but people will feel more rewarded overall. Getting nothing but a few exalts here and there just feels bad.

Second, and probably more important, the super low damage skills need to be buffed, some of them by a lot. At the same time, the insanely strong skills need to be toned down. The worst and the best skills need to get closer together. They do not have to be exactly the same, but they should not be worlds apart either. You cannot have one skill doing twenty damage and another doing eight thousand. That always leads to three or four meta builds dominating the game while the rest are ignored.

Patch 0.2 completely killed the fun for me. I played version 0.1 for about five hundred hours and enjoyed every single minute. Now I do not even want to log in anymore.
