Yeah, I'd wait, as many people are falling off and with the way the game currently works, Trade is essential for any success and fun.

However, you may wish to at least create a character now, which should be ported to the "Early Access' league at release, for posterity sake. I think character creation will be disabled at that time, but of course I don't know that for sure.
