PoE is an MMOARPG
"A massively multiplayer online game (also called MMO and MMOG) is a multiplayer video game which is capable of supporting hundreds or thousands of players simultaneously."
MMO-ARPG The first part refers to the scope of the game (MMO), since the servers CAN house hundreds to thousands of people that DO interact with each other (You can talk/meet up/trade/go on adventures together with anyone, since there are thousands of people on the server to interact with). The second part, ARPG, is the type of game, of course. There are people out there that feel that toons needs to exist within a virtual graphical game world simultaneously with another, in order to think "Massive" needs to apply. However, that is just the traditional interpretation of the word "massive". When we deal with "massive", we are speaking STRICTLY of people on the server, and their ability to interact with each other, which I feel is required. PoE allows this amount of people on their servers as well as their interaction. Flame away. |

You're right. Unfortunately, 'MMORPG' is typically shortened to 'MMO' -- while MMOARPG can also be shortened to MMO, this can and will cause confusion.
And they said *I* was bad at PoE. At least I made it out of act 1 and know how to use the /dnd function. El oh fucking el.
I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period. |

" how many people can you see/interact with at once in PoE? i think it's 6 out of town, and probably 15-30ish inside town? how many people can you see/interact with at once in what is a clear example of an MMO, like WoW? 1,000+; basically as many as can fit together in the area before the server buckles from the load. i don't see PoE as qualifying as "massive". it's an online ARPG. if we use your definition of massive (simply existing on the same server and being able to interact at some point in time), almost every game in existence with online functionality qualifies as an MMO. Dark Souls? all the players exist on the same server, and can interact with each other. therefore Dark Souls must be an MMO! but it's not. Dernière édition par Zaole#3157, le 6 avr. 2012 à 21:51:45

I see your point, Char! That sums it up much better.
Thanks. Dernière édition par Mushuukyou#0537, le 6 avr. 2012 à 21:52:27

" Irrelevant. You can't see anyone in any MMO. You can interact with anyone. " Hundreds to thousands of people are online at the same time, AND able to interact with each other, right? Dernière édition par Mushuukyou#0537, le 6 avr. 2012 à 21:52:02

If a game has hundreds to thousands of people online that can interact with each other, it sounds like an MMO to me.

Guys, I think you should take the Massively out of the MMO and just keep it to MOARPG ;D

"The first commercial MMORPG (although what constitutes "massive" requires qualification when discussing mid-1980s mainframes) was Island of Kesmai designed by Kelton Flinn and John Taylor. Still roguelike, this game became available in 1985 for $12.00 per hour via the CompuServe online service and supported up to one hundred players.[15]"
Just want to say that I have a long history with Kesmai and have spoken to both of the creators on a few occasions. *TOOT TOOT* yup that's my horn :) If you have account problems please Email Support

It's not a MMOG. MMOG are generally related to persistent state worlds, among other things.
But who gives a damn really about terminology! |
