What is mana reservation?

I'm a total noob and running a templar build I found here on the forum. It's using Herald of Thunder which reduces my mana pool due to Mana Reservation.
What is it exactly? Is it a penalty for some awesome ability? I'm constantly running out of mana in longer fights because of this Herald but probably also because of Mind over Matter.
I have a Tabula Rasa robe with 6 linked gem slots and when I put it in there it even almost halves my mana pool. For now I've put it into a 3 linked gem to reduce the mana reservation.
I'm doing something wrong. If someone could just briefly explain what mana reservation is and what the point is exactly? And if it's a good thing or a bad thing?

Auras or Heralds reserve mana, and they can be linked with certain support gems to improve the auras, but this also causes them to reserve more mana. If you want to run a Herald, you probably want it in a socket by itself, at least until later in the game.
What is the mana reserved for? Is it just lost? What's the point?
A Herald by default reserves 25% of your maximum mana. This can be significantly increased when you pimp the Herald's effects with support gems.

For example, if you link Herald of Ice to Hypothermia the support gem adds its own 120% mana multiplier to the equation and Herald of Ice will now reserve 30% of your maximum mana instead of 25%.

Mana reservation can be reduced with the Enligten support gem or various "less mana reservation" mods on gear or nodes in tree. The Reduced Mana support gem does not affect mana reservation anymore.

Now, Mind over Matter (or MoM for short) is another factor but not related to your mana reservation. MoM will reduce your mana when you take damage before it affects your life pool, the bigger the hit you take the less mana is left in the tank.
Your character is private so I can't say anything based on your current skills/talents, but generally you don't want to link your heralds or if you do you only want a couple links. They are a nice damage buff, but not a big enough part of your damage(especially on boss fights) to merit them taking up a lot of your mana. Most support gems have mana multipliers, and each applies to the base 25% mana reservation of the herald(or any linked aura). With a tabula, most people put their main skill in there with 5 support gems and put heralds/auras in other items.

Additionally, going Mind over Matter early can be rough as you lack the mana regen to keep casting. You should probably have 2 good mana flasks at least one of which has instant recovery if you find yourself frequently out of mana. Later on as you get a bigger mana pool and more regen it will get a lot easier and you can drop one of the flasks.

Also, being able to apply warlords mark curse to enemies will allow your damage to leech back mana and keep you from running out. One thing many people do is link herald of thunder with curse on hit and warlords mark curse. Curse on hit has no mana reservation and since it targets things at range for a while after you kill it tends to apply to the next group you run into before you start attacking.
Most spells, you cast the spell, and it consumes mana for that cast, which can then regen. An aura like a Herald, or Wrath, or Vitality, is ALWAYS on. But you only cast it once. To balance this fact, it 'always' uses some of your mana.

This prevent people from using EVERY aura, because you only have so much mana to maintain them.
And unless it was already clear, you can turn on/off auras as you please, so you never lose the mana permanently, only when the aura is turned on. Later in the game, you will have ways to replenish mana via leech or regen, and you will be able to run multiple mana reserving things and do fine with just 10% mana left.
All right thanks for the answers. So no mechanic I'm missing here, it's just the cost to keep Herald up.
As for the mana issues in general, I guess I'll have to cast less and keep running around during those longer fights.

hmm, "private profile" is unchecked in my profile settings.
I'll have a look at warlords mark curse thanks.

Various ways to apply this curse:

1. Cast manually (not very popular)

2. Link it to Herald of Thunder + Curse on Hit (no extra mana multiplier involved here so reservation remains at 25%), this works very reliably for clearing maps but not so much in boss fights.

3. Link it to Cast When Damage Taken (CWDT). Keep CWDT at lvl 1 so it will be triggered often, in this case Warlords's Mark must not be higher than lvl 4. Less practicable for clearing but great for boss fights.

4. Run it as a permanent aura with Blasphemy support (at the expense of 35% mana reservation)

You can also use a combination of 2 & 3.

Avoid hexproof/cannot leech maps. ;)
