Why did the masters betray us?

Afterall, they are the ones who made you who you are.

Without them, you would still be stuck on a shore somewhere in your loincloth whiffing at zombies with a club and still using a level 1 spells/skills.

Not true? They had nothing to do with your skill/level progression lol, they were basically just merchants
Haku was pissed that you cooperated with Kitava cultists in A5

I suppose it's from the lore POV.
PoE has some weird lore quirks, like e.g. cultists. My first reaction was "WTF? This Kitava? This practically Satan in Karui's culture? And they are supposed to be good guys? I do not know what you guys are smoking there, but give me some of this stuff!"
"War's over, soldier. You just don't know it yet. Everybody lost."

First point I'd like to make it, how are these masters betraying your character? You started as a brand new exile this league, they should have no knowledge about this new exile as it is a completely new person in Wraeclast.

^ This. Every time we start a character a new timeline begins, therefore the masters in any Betrayal timeline aren't betraying us (or we them) because we never were allies in the first place.

I don't know a lot about the lore, but sometimes i get curious and read upon it, but i can't find anything about the masters' betrayal. I talked to Jun but she doesn't say anything, and so far the traitor masters don't say anything either.

What made them go from friendly quest givers to murderous traitors?

People learned about opening a masters mission at lvl 8, they were ready to present their glory. Then the player hit another master, abandoned mission, checked loot, did it to all of them.

Riiiight.

You just *happened* to find those weapons and skill gems left lying around. Ever wonder who planted all that loot you just happened to find?

The Masters. They have been manipulating you this whole time in Wraeclast and you still think you found all this stuff on your own.

They have been behind everything that you are all this time.

Now that you have succeeded in defeating their enemies for them it's time for the Masters to stamp you out before you get any stronger.

Because you don't do their missions. Specialyl Catarina's :/
That's the thing about the lore right? They didn't betray you, not really. They were part of the syndicate by the time you dropped in wraeclast.
Makes me want to go back and read their dialogues before betrayal and see if there are any hints of it happening.

Heist League - GGG
I'm sorry to necro this post from the infinite depths of the (Azurite Mines) forum pages, but I have the imperius need to actually understand this particular topic.

As it is, my question is exactly the title of this thread: Why, in the whole universe, did the original Forsaken Masters betray us?

What's their motivation? What compeled them to do such a thing when never before was it even hinted that they hated us?

I accept the fact that I haven't played PoE since Incursion, but I'm very doubtful about things having changed THAT much over the course of Delve so as to they going from hanging with us in our hideouts to wanting us dead, preferibly by their own hands.

Please, if anyone knows, I'd very much appreciate the time put into explaining this matter. As it is now, I'm absolutely and completely lost, and I'd very much like to understand.
First you'll have to convince me that you realize this is a game. Until then I'm not going to discuss lore with you.
