I've actually used a hybrid aura-support/summoner build for the last several leagues... not QUITE as solo viable in the higher-end maps... but being able to bounce between solo-mapping and running as a support for other, more power-oriented builds gives some much needed diversity/"anti-burnout" to the game :)

Depends of the definition of summoner. Spectre summoners so far are the worst type of build due to the need to re-summon spectres after every restart/crash/log-in, every single spectre summoner knows that . That is a huge issue especially since 3.0 is filled with crashes and bugs.
