So... WHY does Dynamic Resolution default to "on"?
I guess this shows how little the beta was for feedback... Since it was brought up back in beta: it leads to a LOT of complaints, and global being filled with these complaints, that would've been circumvented had the setting defaulted to "off."
Given that the performance issues are NOT due to players having weak video cards, scaling the resolution generally has minimal impact on performance. Most framerate sags are the result of the game's engine not shifting enough load to the GPU, and hence the CPU gets bogged down. The result: dynamic resolution really fails to keep high framerates, but DOES massively degrade visual quality. There may be some users who would benefit from using it, but they'd be rather niche: higher-end CPUs, but with unusually weaker graphics, such as some forms of integrated graphics. As the majority of users do not benefit noticeably from it, and moreover, it causes a LOT of complaints, this setting should default to "off." One could've understood it defaulting to "on" in the beta when the goal (ostensibly) would be to make people test it, but it's rather embarrassing that it was left like this for the release. imho wrong.
powerful computers shouldn't have to revert to dynamic resolution. only midgame rigs which occasionally enter situations their computer han't handle or people with toasters will experience it. so enabling it by default is a one size fits all - method. age and treachery will triumph over youth and skill!

" This is not a matter of "opinion," it's a matter of facts. Calling it a "one-size fits all" is like trying to fit a dog sweater on every human; I'm explaining something a bit more technical than "try not having a toaster." (seriously, have you LOOKED at global today?) Powerful computers ARE frequently reverting to dynamic resolution. The game's code is VERY light on the GPU compared to the CPU. In almost every "normal" balance, the game WILL be loaded more on the CPU than the GPU. To make it *not*, you'd have to have a pretty extremely skewed case; even, say, a 7600K (a $240 CPU put out THIS YEAR) coupled with a plain GTX 750 (a card that was barely over $100 when it came out THREE YEARS AGO) finds that it's not loading the GPU fully, but *is* dropping frames because of CPU usage... This gets even MORE embarrassing when those users happen to have a MODERN video card like a 1070 Ti, yet somehow the game is going "hurr durr you're on a potato, so let's scale it down!" There's a fatal problem with that:scaling the resolution does next to nothing to lighten the load on the CPU, so when it kicks in, the resolution will often fail to find a middle ground, cratering the visuals for pretty much zero performance improvement. The only people that WILL see any serious benefit of making the game look blurry as hell are those who are using something like a modern i5/i7, yet for some reason or other are running it off of the integrated graphics. Do we just have here a fucking thread of 13 lines about the fact that you need to tick a fucking box in the fucking menu?
**mind blown** That's so fucking retarded :s |

" Well, if 25% of global is tons of people all asking "Why does everything look so blurry," then yeah, there's something wrong. When GGG introduced lockstep mode, they didn't immediately default it for everyone, out of concerns that the sudden (possibly detrimental) performance issues caused for those who'd previously worked fine WITHOUT it. And yet, now, they introduce a feature that really only benefits maybe 2-5% of players tops, yet auto-default it for the other 95-98% too? Here's the thing, if people are getting near perma resolution changes then their PC seriously has problems, i've got it on and it's not noticeably dropped the resolution yet (and it's running on a dated hd7850 card)
Either that or they are expecting to have the game max settings over and above what's in the game options via their gfx control panel, i mean people are still whining that they can't tun shadows off or go to potato texture quality(via the ini) Ancestral Bond. It's a thing that does stuff. -Vipermagi
