And Charan paid just a few k extra to get voice acting for his sword, the amount of lines being similar to what the characters have. Sure, it was most likely a bro deal but I don't think it would be possible if the regular price was 20k or something.

Every single step along the way takes time and therefore costs money. From the initial proposal/discussions and sketches, then the actual modelling, testing, doing the voice acting to the actual implementation. $$$ tend to pile up fast, especially since stuff like artistic/design choices often aren't an entirely straightforward process.

The "lower six-figure sum" was a piece of info from years ago, though, so yeah, GGG probably have ways to streamline the development of content now and it could be cheaper but it looks like it'll still cost more money than they'd be willing to invest.

Also, time invested making genders is time an employee can't spend on other projects so yeah, there is an extra cost.

It doesn't really matter, though, since the last official answer pretty much was a flat out "not going to happen", anyway.

Also, it could potentially be one of those things that make the playerbase scream foul. It's costly and strictly cosmetic so it's clearly cut as an mtx, however it's a feature other games often offer for free and that's also a factor. I remember we had a bit of a shitstorm about trading via premium tabs, sure, most of it was because it's borderline p2w but some of it was because a decent ingame trading system is an expected feature in online games.
