How are you supposed to get DPS with spells?

So, from this forum I get the illusion that to reliably kill end game bosses (without spending 10min fighting them), you need something about 100K dps(++++).. I recently made block build with 40K dps + vinktar shock and dps feels weak already to tier 10...

So how the **** are you supposed to get spell dps? I would assume that there should by build that can do it even without a loads of unique items, but right now, I just dont see how.

Lets take and example in ice nova, average dmg at lvl 20 gem = 473.

Lets say you have 600% increase dmg and 3x more (thats cca 50, 50 and 30)... And 3.3 casts per sec (Faster casting, lvl 30 spell echo and 9% castin speed from tree... so.. not so bad)

Still with this, you will get 473 * 7 * 3 =9 933 * 3.33 = 33K DPS. Only 33K....

So, how the fuck are you supposed to get dmg from spells when 600% increase and 3 more modifiers will get you only this far? No wonder everyone is using degen, converts damage or using daggers to crit.

Or is the idea of 100K dps as a nice base just wrong all together? But that just doesnt corespond with my gameplay experience, as I mentioned 40-60K feels slow and weak already on tier 8-10.

Lets get your 33k dps. Now add crit with 400% multi to it. Then add burning/poison (because eveyrone is using fire or chaos).

Boom, you have ur dmg.

Och and add +50% dmg from vaal lightning trap as well.
Well, I dont think its really possible to get 600% inc and enough crit in the same time from tree, without using assasin. The point is, that I am not surprised everyone is using those mechanics, when "normal" builds suck.

When I was looking for spell caster builds, every single one used two void batteries. So.. do you need 2 .5 ex worth of wands just to have chance with spell caster?

I am sick of dagger crit already. My block character was designed to verunastra, then I switched to just normal physdps rare sword.. it was same dmg with less cost for sword.. and at the end, after some testing.. I respeced to crit bino, because it was just that much stronger.. :/


About burning.. tha mechanic is just retarded.. you can hit for 20K and get 200K per sec burn.. its absurd.

yes but only with crit.

RT melee disfavour full bleed on tree will not get you 200k degen/sec, more like 600-1000/sec

Put away crit from poison/bleed and the damage is weak. Same with Fire. With all fire degen on tree i never got more than 400/sec fire degen on mobs with rt

mmm, crit + resist penetration.


you dont need dual void batteries. My guildy was using 2 void batteries last league and he had 600k dps on his spell, and that was an ignore resist inquisitor. No one needs 600k dps to work, you dont even need 1/3 of that.

Crit is pretty much an int aligned mechanic, I dont know that having a caster without crit should be considered normal and crit a niche scaling for spells.

Yeah bleed and poison as well.. especialy with assasins' more dmg on crit.

Its not just crit tho.. its the double dip. With 400% inc fire dmg, you are doing same dmg with ignite per sec as you did with the initial cast.

The real question of this thread, is it possible to make strong caster non-crit end game viable build?
Incinerate totems get into the hundreds of thousands pretty cheaply. Flame totems too.

Other than that you need to abuse double dipping to stay reasonably cheap.

You can get pretty good damage from crit too but it needs gear.

Also I wouldn't even call 100k enough. Shaper, guardians, and uber atziri all have a fuckton of health.
