Any tips on how to get my friends to try out Path of Exile?

Sharing my person experience. I was a Diablo diehard for many years. When all my real life friends left Diablo3 and ROS, I still continue playing the game with other clan members that I met since early days of Diablo3.
Back then, I never bother to look at other games, and that includes POE. This however changed on 14th June 2016 when Blizzard banned and labelled me as a botter (I have never cheated in Diablo at all). I was so angry over this false accusation. I wrote in requesting Blizzard to look at my logs (including reports that I have submitted on botters) and they will know that I play on a MAC and my social behavior in the game and my activities in their forum will clear my name. But to my dismay, what I got back are crafted replies and in the last reply from them, they blatantly tell me not to even write in anymore to request for appeal as I will be ignored if I do. From then on, I deleted all their games from my computers, iPhones, iPad. I told my kids to never ever support Blizzard games. Till today, I am still very angry over what happened to me. Blizzard lost a diehard 20+ years fan who bought almost all their games in collectors edition. I stayed in contact with some of the friends in D3 and 1 of them told me to give POE a shot. I did what he suggest and try POE out and you can see from my support pack titles that I am now a POE fan. The depth and possibilities of this game was what attracted me the most. As each day passes by playing this game, I was pleasantly surprised by how much thought the game developers put into the game. There are so many QOL things implemented (e.g. the latest QOL will be searchable skill tree in patch 2.6) in the game that you will never ever see in Diablo. No matter how many time you requested in Diablo forum, you just don't get to see QOL requests implemented. But in POE, it is different. For the very first time in my 20+ years of gaming experience (mostly with Blizzard), POE is the game that gives me the feeling that the developers do play their own game, and I want to see POE grow strong. TLDR: It is always easier to convince a friend to try out POE when they have a bad experience with the game they so beloved. |

you know the old saying.. "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink"
D3 sheeple I wouldn't even bother convincing. |

I've had trouble getting people to stay. I think when you first start the game you are WAY behind the rest of everyone who has some gear, some currency etc. Starting from scratch and not exactly knowing what you are doing is a downside.
The game is relatively easy to pick up but difficult to master without having 2-3 different web pages open. Scouring the internet is almost like the secondary objective of the game. Whether looking up a build, min/max values for certain gear stats, poe trade, poe ninja, etc etc. |

" Pretty spot on. Mastering the game is no trivial task. You need +8 endurance charges in order to persist on. Not to forget CI + Vaal Pact. ;) Another push factor is the death penalty when a new player push into the red maps. A friend of mine who switched from D3 pretty much stopped playing POE after too many sudden 1 shot deaths that occur without any warning. |

" True, it's a thin line between "helping" and "ruining", I tried my best not to cross it, but who knows... And if you tried it and didn't work, well I have no more ideas to offer. PoE it's def not for everyone, you have to really like it and get hooked or you'll leave soon. "Metas rotate all the time, eventually the developers will buff melee"

Got to quit worrying about what other people enjoy doing and develop a sense of self. Your friends don't need to like the same things that you do. Playing ARPGs triggers something in those of us who like mindless repetitive things. Some people can't stand it. It's probably a survival trait. Some people like tasks like this and some don't. If we were all the same, we probably would have lost to the Neanderthals.

when i started out with poe, i was a d3 fanatic and have played tons and tons of d3 to the point i could play for days without sleep.
when d3 was dying, poe came to light and when i first started out in poe i was completely lost. no idea how passive tree work no idea how linking/gems/items work hence i left poe and came back permanently when d3 finally died was very difficult starting out and being randomly recruited by a guild helped tremendously. I would say without that guild encounter, i would certainly leave poe out of confusion and no one to seek help from. |
