Or, like any sane company, send a code to your e-mail or use your smart phone's Google authenticator app to generate a code. Don't overcomplicate it. Also make sure you don't fall into common traps to lose your password, since that's the only way you get 'hacked'


as a european player i would prefer not having to trust a company that falls under american jurisdiction (which means full exposure of all data to the gov and keeping that leak secret) as well as having that number not sent to my mail account either as the password's security already depends on it.

You would not be exposing any data. The Google authenticator app does not rely on any personal or account information other than linking a serial number to your PoE account that is used to generate a code. Besides that serial number, there is virtually no data that Google or "the gov" would have access to.
