I havn't read through the entire topic. Forgive me if this has already been mentioned. Using Pyre + AoF + Herald of As is perfectly viable if you aim for the overkill burning damage. Keep in mind how many options you have to scale your damage (Inc Physical Damage, Inc Cold Damage, Inc Fire Damage, Inc Elemental Damage, Inc Burning Damage, etc).
I have a lvl 76 Character using this Setup (Pyre, AoF, Herald of Ash, BoR, Doryani's Catalist). I'm currently @13k Damage with a single hit (with Blood Magic Gem + Life Leech Gem - so there is much space for improvement). You could scale you damage up to 20k with a single hit pretty easy with proper level/gear. You can imagine the heavy AoE burning damage you can deal.
This spec will also be buffed with the new skill tree.
I'm looking to do exactly this for the new leagues, a molten strike HoA burn build. What class and weapon type do you recommend? Slow and powerful 2h or dual wield and try to get something like Doryani sceptre?
