Gem Reroll Recipe

Maybe it's only me, but I tend to find a ton of the same type of gem. It would be great if these could actually be useful somehow, instead of either sitting in my stash permanently or being vendored.

One possibility might be to add something like "sell 3x same gem" -> "receive random gem of same color from gem's required level or lower". By required level, I mean the level required for a character to use a lvl 1 gem (eg. Cold Snap is lvl 4 req).

But wait, there's Billy Mays! Since this wouldn't be the most useful recipe on its own, it would be cool if gems could be "upgraded" to the next level tier. In this way, maybe a trio of Cold Snap gems could be sold for something from the lvl 10 req tier of blue gems (ie. maybe you receive a Wrath gem). I'm not sure what a good item would be to add to this, but I'm thinking ideally it should be something relatively cheap since the cost of the gems at higher levels would compensate for the potential gain.

I guess there's the potential for people to endlessly create new characters and farm gems off the Hillock quest, so maybe make the recipe only work for lvl 4/10+ gems?

I like that idea.
How about 3 identical gems + Alch orb = A random gem of same colour (higher or lower but the higher the lvl the gems, the better chance of getting a higher level gem in return, sort of like increasing the quality of armor before trying to fuse). This would almost be like D2 with runes but a little more RNG to keep in line with POE's gambling addiction.

Thats a god awful waste of an alc

Also this idea although good intentions isn't that great. Literally all you have to do is not pick up the gem. Its not different from seeing gear on the ground you wouldn't use and not picking that up either.

Except that you can turn garbage +quality gear, which is very common, into something useful. The same thing exists for gems, sure, but gem drop rates are low enough that it feels like you should always be able to make use of one somehow when it drops.

What kind of logic is that? If something drops and its not useful to you or anyone else, it shouldn't be turned into something useful just on principle.
