Cannot Accept Initial Quest

I cannot accept the initial quest upon starting a new character. Please fix.

Did you pick up the weapon?
Your loot filter may be hiding it. "VPs are not required to change their posting style. They are still welcome to express their opinions and take part in any discussions they wish. It's not the loot filter. I've disabled it (set filter to none and default - neither help).
Moreover, it's not that I cannot pick up the quest reward - it's that I cannot even accept the quest to get it started. ==== I've moved on after suiciding to Hillock - still, this needs to be fixed (hardcore would make new characters nearly impossible). |

You wake up on the beach, click the dude next to you and he'll drop a weapon for you to pick up. If you don't see the weapon then you've probably toggled off the visibility of loot on the ground.
Alternatively you may have turned off tutorials? I dunno if doing that skips giving you the initial quest since it's tutorial oriented. The quest goes.
You wake up, there is a near by weapon, you pick it up and EQUIP it, THEN speak to the half dead guy, where upon the zombie eats his face. If you do not equip the weapon you can talk to the guy but thats it, nothing will happen. You might want to make a video as proof and as an example of what is happening. Ancestral Bond. What happens when you hold down the Alt key? That should show all items regardless of a filter.
It doesn't make a bit of difference, guys. The balls are inert.

You never say which part isn't working. Do you see the weapon on the ground? Do you pick it up? Do you equip it? Now it lets you start the quest. Do you talk to the exile? Do you kill the zombie? Does he drop a skill gem? Do you put the skill gem in the weapon?

Sometimes if I relog and start a new character this goes away for a time - but it soon recurs. Items are making sounds as they drop - but they're not visible on the ground no matter what I try (no filter, default filter, any filter I have in the list, etc.).
