channeling skills and manacost

i think the main problem is mana cost there. even with elreon rings the mana cost is crazy high. with some builds even with mana flasks it gets hard to sustain. with spells that scale manacost with levels it gets more worse.

solution would be making mana regen viable like it was in the good old days where arctic armor needed a shitload of em. really excited about the new channeling skills but also worried that they will fail.

From my personal experience, channeling skills shine more when you stick them with totems. Avoiding mana cost sink and the danger of standing still is one of the perks of being a totem build, though Hierophant is what helping me with the mana cost to begin with.

You've just gotta be willing to make some tradeoffs to help with your costs. And you should be willing to make those tradeoffs, because the output of our channeled skills so far greatly exceeds that of a typical non-channeled skill, and the new skills will likely continue that trend.

There's options for dealing with mana:

There's areas in the tree with reduced mana cost, particularly around the templar/upper marauder area. Jewels also can roll reduced mana cost, and generally most people consider it a low-value affix so the prices on such jewels isn't too bad. And there's the reduced mana support gem, which can drop those costs to extremely low levels when combined with reduced cost in the tree.

You can use mana leech, if the skill hits of course.

You can just rely on a decent mana pool and some mana regen... it only takes a few passive points to get like 50% increased max mana and some decent extra regen. Not to mention rallying cry can give a large amount of flat regen, which can be further boosted by %mana regen.

Or of course, there's always flasks. Since like 2.0 mana flasks aren't bad at all... some of them can be rolled to use ridiculously few charges, while others can provide extremely high amounts of mana in a hurry.

Point is, there's options for dealing with mana. It's not always enticing to give up damage to use those options, but sometimes it's something you've gotta do; it's not a flaw in their design, rather it adds to the depth of decision-making involved when building for the skill.

Well said Shppy, I myself will be trying to make an RF Scorching Ray Chieftain running off of blood magic. Well see how well that goes over.

Oh and congrats on the projectile damage on armor bug fix.

Yeah, I'm gonna be doing something similar, using RF with burning vortex (socketed into a Horror helm for 30% more ele damage double-dipping), and planning on bring a Scorching Ray socketed into Doon on one weapon set, Mjolner in the other... keep things fresh with lots of options.

And yeah, I was really waiting for the armor fix and I'm glad it won't have to wait for 2.5, cuz I'm planning on using Brass Dome and possibly (but probably not) Grand Spectrums and getting myself a solid 25-30k armor without flasks.

Thats funny, the Doon is what I was planning on using for my weapon, but im going to combo with a fire totem for my 6 socket on my chest piece. Ive actually calculated how much strength i can build and it will be expensive, but im shooting for 1k. Its going to require a lot of uniques, and some expensive jewels, but its always good to have long term goals right?

Yeah, if I'm right my setup should have about 900 str with Mjolner, 1k with Doon.

I'm figuring the Doon setup will be what I use for the most part, I just kinda felt like bringing Mjolner along for the ride since I gotta get that much Int to use Repentance anyway.
