abyssus vs bringer of rain for melee crit phys

Hey guys,

Going to be running a melee crit build (Staves - Hegemony's Era) and was wondering on your opinions between the two cause I simply cannot decide. I have ran both helms and love both helms but I just cant seem to pick one.

Abyssus is all about the damage output and the massive crit multiplier.. far more offensive but it doesn't come without its negative side... Already have IR/grace going, maybe dropping hatred to make room for purity of lightning to help against the physical damage increase? I will be limited to 5L set ups though for now as I am budgeting out my currency to help friends play higher end builds themselves.

BoR: The budget 7Link helm. Has half the damage boost of abyssus and none of the crit multi... but it comes up far more defensive, especially with blind. It falls short with preset gem supports as your faster attacks/melee phys will be stuck and non-maxed levels with 0 quality. As I will be running Hegemony's Era the helm will bring me to a total of 30% block with me current tree plan and pushing me to a 40% chance to gain an endurance charge on block. Also a negative strike to the helm is no chest piece.

Let me know your thoughts.
Thanks for your opinions guys!

For a crit build I'd go with abyssus + LC. Even if you don't use purity of lightning you will take less physical damage with that setup than using BoR.
Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

Altho if you want to have a build that is somewhat not too squishy I would suggest a lightning coil but not with abyssus. A rat's nest is amazing for dps, or just a solid rare helm with accuracy + life (and resists)

is amazing too. Very nice life, a bit less IAS and somewhat less crit than Rat's Nest. Plus, it's very cheap because people don't like to use it for some weird reason.

I think it ultimately depends on your wealth.

If you can get a good 5/6L chest, Abyssus is going to offer you a lot more DPS, and potentially more defense as well. The damage increase is factored in after armor and damage reduction, so it's not AS bad as it looks on paper. With a chest, it will be much easier to max your resistances, as well as boost your armor/evasion.

When comparing BoR vs Abyssus + 6L chest: BoR offers more HP, and a little bonus with the blind. Abyssus rocks it with the major deeps.

If you're poor or don't have really solid gear to maintain the Abyssus, start with the BoR until your gear is good enough. If you have the currency or the gear already, go with Abyssus.

People don't like to use it because it applies a 50% reduction to damage while on low-life and has generally weaker attributes than most other helms.
A nice side effect of abyssus and the huge damage it gives you (basically double them) is the application of all status ailments very easily and for a long time. And with Hatred you will freeze almost anything very quickly. It's not "that" dangerous, but better be prepared for hard encounters if you don't have coil (appropriate flasks, vaal grace).

When two witches watch two watches, which witch watches which watch?
If the witches watching watches watch the same watch while you watch which witch watches which watch, they switch watches; then, the watch switching witches watch which watch you watch.
Watching witches watch watches is not for the faint of heart...

What other helms? If you need resists and life then rare helm is better.. If you need pure dps/crit helm abyuss and rat's nest are better but if you need something in between that helm is perfect. I really don't know why is this helm a 1 chaos unique and that 50% reduced dmg on ll is irrelevant, .. how often are people on low life? :)
In a world with CwDT + EC + IC + ID, there's no reason not to use Abyssus for its mega-damage bonuses.
