Hit detection and hit boxes seriously needs some work. Videos and Images included!
I dunno if anyone noticed, but there is something very odd and dodgy with hit detection in this game. First arrows and spells do not travel where you have the cursor (and I posted another thread with video to show it) and secondly melee characters are missing way too much.
I have videos I am uploading right now, showing mobs right in front of me and I am trying to kill them for a very very long time, which clearly the swing is not hitting at all. Anyone else noticed this too? UPDATE: Rhys kindly responded to my thread in the bug section, here is his answer along with my reply as well. Rhys's response:

I think people have noticed it, but it might be better to talk about it in the bugs and feedback forum. If only because General Discussion is kind of swamped right now and you might be more likely to get the attention of the devs there.

You do realize you have a chance to miss, right? Spec your character and you'll notice difference as you level.

" This is more a case of the game not registering hits, or needing the player to click somewhere funky in order to actually hit anything. There have been a couple of threads about it. I'm not a n00b- I'm a Online Game Floor Examination Expert.

I haven't really noticed any issues. Are you sure the mob isn't evading your attacks? I'm playing as a melee character with resolute technique currently and I never miss unless the target moves out of range or I'm desycned.

" You must actually aim in this game. Not just point in the general direction like some oversimplified games.I hope to hell GGG leaves this matter just the way it is. |

Generally, if you have the red outline on a mob, and you are in range, you will swing/shoot at that enemy. If the enemy moves a bit while you hold down the mouse/keyboard button, you will continue to swing/shoot at the enemy even if your cursor is now no longer directly over the mob.
If your swings/shots are not hitting the mobs for any damage, there are two possible reasons. a) You are losing Accuracy vs Evasion checks with the monster. There is no popup text indicating this, so it just looks like you are doing no damage. b) Your client and the server are out of sync with regards to either your position or the monster's position. This is caused by internet latency, and there is not much that you can do other than just wait for the client and the server to re-sync, or just portal/log out if you are about to die due to it. edit: that said, there are some mobs that are slightly more difficult to hit because they have small hitboxes and tend to move around quickly, such as sandspitters, monkeys, and snakes. However, this has more to do with my lack of manual dexterity than the hit detection system itself. Alteration Orb Union Local #7 "Holding the line, on sixteen to one!" You can see what I mean in this video here: http://youtu.be/NPblo1-RE88
Second video: http://youtu.be/NT7sHbw0Fjo I am uploading the bug on my melee character as well, its the same thing, its missing the hitboxes when mobs are near. It swings and swings and is not hitting anything at all, and I checked the stats and I have a hit rating of 89%, which means I should miss roughly one hit every 10, unless the RNG gods really hate me. | |
I noticed that hitting small enemies is sometimes difficult as I click on them, but in the act of releasing the mouse button, I release slightly off their character model (due to them moving and being small). This causes me to run up to the spot of the click and dont attack my target as I never actually clicked them.
As for hit detection...remember that sometimes your attacks will not land (I can't comment on ranged as I am playing a Marauder right now). In these cases, you will attack, but your attack misses. That's why there are bonuses/buffs you can spend skill points on to increase your accracy. Some skills actually have crazy percise hit detection that borders on problematic such as Ground Slam. At first, I thought the skill was failing on striking enemies that were right in its cone of attack as they would take no damage but were clearly in front of me. However, I found out that only the thin cracks that protrude out from the character on the ground are what cause damage. Enemies have to be hit by the cracks exactly or they wont be affected. |
