What happens to stash if you delete your (only) character?

If I delete my one and only character to reroll to something else, will I lose the contents of my stash, or would the items still be availible to the new character?

The question is more, why dont you create a new character without deleting the old one?

I imagine the stash is saved seperately rather then on one of any character, why I think this, I've a number of times now lost my only HC character and made a new one and everything inside my stash is still there.

I deleted my old witch because of crappy skill tree, she was my only character and the stash stayed the same (it doesn't get deleted even when there are no characters on the account). The reason I didn't create a new one is because I wanted the same name.

You can still have items in your stash even if you have no characters.
