PoE in Parallels on OSX
Hi there,
So recently I've been offered a chance to pick up a cheap (legit) copy of Parallels for my 2011 Macbook Pro. Whilst my Macbook does me just fine for all other games I play (which have an OSX version), it's totally garbage for PoE (using the Wine client download that has been circulating since Closed Beta). This is a problem because I think this game is mind-blowingly fun. Basically, I think my problem as it stands is my Macbook isn't powerful enough to keep a decent frame rate and not lag out in graphically intensive situations. This means Vaal Smash is my arch nemesis. I think this partly has something to do with the fact I'm using free Windows emulation software to run PoE. Since Parallels advertises the fact you can play relatively modern, graphically intensive games I figure it should do the job for PoE, no? Does anyone have any experience with playing PoE on Parallels? Is it fine? Should it significantly improve the ability of my Macbook to handle the game and not lose FPS? Specs are as follows: Processor 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7 Memory 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 Graphics Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB Hope this is in the right place! Thanks. Oh and I forgot to mention...
I also might be able to get Windows 8 for a good price too. How would running Windows 8 in Boot Camp whilst playing PoE compare to playing PoE through Parallels on OSX? Given my hardware, ought PoE be able to run problem free if done straight from Windows 8 in Boot Camp? |

Processor is fine, ram is fine the gfx card is integrated? even if it wasn't you would still struggle to get a decent frame rate without lowering settings quite a bit.

I'm unsure what it means for my gfx to be integrated. Is there something I could do to check this?
I know about the Windows method for lowering the graphics settings below the permitted level in the in-game options. Is there a way of lowering them whilst using the Wine emulator? |

"integrated graphics" are graphics cards that are "integrated" into the main board for the laptop. Usually these are made my manufacturers like Intel, etc. It's also generally called "on-board video" since it doesn't have it's own "dedicated" graphics card like in a normal PC.
Many laptops have expansion ports specifically to add a "mobile" video card by an actual video card manufacturer like AMD/ATI or Nvidia. These would be what is referred to as a "dedicated" graphics card. Most integrated cards are pretty bad for gaming. They are meant as a bare minimum to do "stuff" on the laptop (like browse the web and use Office or something). They aren't meant for heavy graphics processing. This is also why laptops generally do not make good gaming machines. They lack the hardware to support many games, in addition to their thermal problems (they don't vent heat well). Edit: you can lower the texture quality to below "medium" by modifying the production_config.ini file the same way you would on a Windows machine. The difference is that under wine, you'd find them linked to wherever your documnents\My Games is. In my install on Debian, it is in ~/My Games/Path of Exile Dernière édition par Drakier#1520, le 1 juil. 2013 à 14:34:54

" tbh i've not used a Mac so i wouldn't know where to check for the info to see if the card is integrated, other than opening the case and having a look at the PCI slots to see if there was one fitted. The problem with it being integrated is that it uses system ram to work and even if it wasn't integrated and is a 3000 series card(ati or nvidia) it is way to old to run the game reliably As for the wine emulator i don't have a clue how you would change the Config.ini settings you could ask on the thread here: http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/48708 Ancestral Bond. Just my 2 cents from personal experience... I found that the Wine emulation and Parallels* were both the same for me, however Parallels required more RAM/CPU due to it having to run a full OS. Both ran the game well enough, until getting to about 5-10 characters/monsters visible, then lots of lag (again, this is just my personal experience, and will vary by machine, of course).
Boot Camp, for me, has been a *significant* improvement overall. I'm running 7, so I don't know how 8's drivers/directx/etc support is for these type of games, but I'd hope it wouldn't be much worse, lol *Parallels has "beta" DX10 emulation, whereas Fusion only supports DX9 and doesn't run PoE at all. |

Thanks. Good to hear Boot Camp has offered some more success. I might try and track down a copy of 7. I dislike the win8 interface anyway..!
Out of curiosity, how much space did you dedicate to the partition? I only really need the partition for playing PoE on this machine so don't want to overkill my allocation and waste space. Dernière édition par Seeley#1031, le 2 juil. 2013 à 15:34:53
