When building the temple, why are the halls so restricted?

When choosing the layout of the temple...

Half of the rooms are hallways; elbows, 4-ways, etc.

The game doesn't allow me to use them for the most part. They just get tacked on the rear or the sides and are pointless bloat on the layout.

Please allow them to be used properly, or have them given way less often.
