Exceptional Items are an issue
|
The problem with exceptional items especially the 2 socket once is that they cant drop as rare and magic. That leads to most of the ground loot of magic and rare being extremely devalued. Pikcing anything up exccept Ring and Amulets is not useful. You cna get lucky and drop sth valuable, but its rare and not worth the effort.
That combined with an extremely powerful crafting system isnt good. ARPGs live from loot fiesta, but POE2 is not that. Its a lot of loot that has zero to little value. In 99.9% of cases. For early and mid endgame you use non-exceptional items and for late endgame you switch to exceptional bases and either buy them from trade or craft some yourself (hint: crafting yourself is cheaper). An ideal situation since there's a constant upgrade curve for gear.

" Im not denying that, but even a 2 weeks into a league most dropped items are useless to pick up which goes completely against what ARPGs are mostly designed around. Looting! “The bird of Hermes is my name, eating my wings to make me tame.”

I'm not against dropped items not being valuable. After all, crafting supplies also get dropped, and I find that more exciting. Moreover, in PoE1, it's exciting to see div cards or scarabs drop. PoE2 is not quite there yet, because it's too new, but it will get there.
However, dropped gear certainly is meaningless. This is particularly noticeable when T5 unidentified items drop, and they are comparatively not great. Taking a step back, maybe an issue with PoE2 is that the goal is not clear. Is it a loot game? Is it a crafting game? Is it a bossing game? Is it an area expansion game? Is it combo centric? Is it clear speed centric? You cannot do all of them at once, because doing one with dilute or undermine the other. Until PoE2 is clear about what it is, it cannot implement systems that drive towards that goal. That's why ground loot feels unsatisfying. Maybe it's a crafting game? But then, why are PoE1 style chaos orbs and scour orbs removed? |

CGG: Crafting Gear Games
GCG: Grinding Currency Games I spend far too much time looking at gear drops, only to sell nearly all of them for shards. I'm optimistic that enough features will be added to improve the gear situation, but it currently is a problem. It's great that it's easier to buy items with asynchronous trade, which helps those of us with limited play time. Still, it's hard to find enough currency to either purchase or craft. It's weird they've gone so long refusing the have iLvl influence roll tiers and instead add a very destructive trade itemization slant instead. Just do what we've been saying for a decade now and have lower tiers drop off as iLvl increases. That way both drops and crafting benefit.

" Good question. XD |

I don't think it's the Exceptionals that are the problem.
The nonExceptionals just need to have more utility built into them. Perhaps reforging could have an increasingly higher chance to yield an Exceptional variant once its been fed enough of the nonExceptional item. |

lol it's nothing to do with exceptional bases. If they nerf exceptional bases that's just one less reason to even bother playing this game. As the only reason to map currently is to find good uniques (which are few). To find currency/crafting materials etc and exceptional bases.
The problem with rare items is that having to pick up and identify them just to find nothing of value 99.9% of the time is not worth the hassle. They can lower the drop rate of T5 but increase the quality of the rolls on them. And that would add something more to the game. But in actual fact most of the loot dropping will always remain untouched because the process of having to pick it up and identify it and then throw them back on the ground 999 times out of a 1000 is a massive time sink. And kills the flow of mapping. |
