Cast on Minion Death doesn't work with spectre self-destruct skills

Hi! I tried combo-ing cast on minion death with minions that die by using their own skills, such as the Zealous Excavator, and it simply doesn't give any energy. Is this by design, or is it a bug?

I know minion death triggers don't work with expired durations and weapon swaps, but it doesn't mention anything about self destructs.
