Bosses with long invulnerability phases
|
Exhibit A: Rugosa (the singing mermaid). If you don't do enough dps to kill this boss in a few seconds, she can do two (or three?) invulnerability phases when she jumps in the pool and sings her song FOR A FREAKING 1 MINUTE at a time!! That's a massive waste of the player's time!
Exhibit B: The first boss from Act 4 cultist island (and his map versions). It you don't kill him quickly enough, he gets 3 shiny buffs that make him invulnerable for a VERY long time. Something like 3-5 minutes! That's just insane! Exhibit C: A boss from some Act 2 themed maps that looks like Jamanra wearing black clothes. This one periodically flies up in the air and becomes invulnerable while spawning adds or doing something else that doesn't seem to matter. But he can fly for 20-30 sec at a time. Not quite as bad as the other two but still an annoying waste of time. Exhibit D: The final boss of Act 4 and Jade Isle. After you defeat his first two forms he goes into an extremely long animated sequence while invulnerable: blah blah blah Tukohama blah blah blah Power blah blah blah blah - before starting the final phase of the encounter. Please make all those invulnerable phases shorter! And I mean a WHOLE LOT shorter. Dernière édition par Kelvynn#6607, le 2 oct. 2025 à 19:36:46 Dernier bump le 23 oct. 2025 à 08:00:17

Bump.

the only real problem is that the invulnerability is not explained by game mechanics. this can be solved by giving them a certain layer of guard while not stopping the player from targeting them.

same with Warframe. don't know why but western dev seem to love these terrible game design.

The only one I would agree is Rugosa. Her petrify mechanics is so easily dodgeable & the add she summon doesn't pose any threat. So yeah, make it shorter but much more deadly.
But after that, I completely disagree with your point. It isn't a loot farming simulator so at some point, Boss need to be challenging. And those "invulnerability" phase is what spice up the fight. For example, your "Exhibit B", those buffs can be removed. 3 guys buff him on high ground and you need to make the boss aim near them when he does his "rock throw" attack. If aimed correctly, they are temporary disable. And in the case of "Exhibit D", all final boss of acts have those. They add flavor and make this less dull & more epic. The "worse" case is with the final boss of act 1 when he start his second phase. He is invulnerable but still beat you down while he give his speech to the "countess". Also I was surprised that you didn't point out his "fog attack" invulnerability phase in your list - even if again, it's one of my favorite phase of all final boss. Heaven forbid you can't nuke every boss in .01 seconds without ever seeing what makes them bosses instead of white mobs?

" Invulnerability phases are anything BUT spice, since you do nothing but wait them out and then proceed to oneshot the remainder of their hp. |

invulnerability has always been trash

The mermaid is generally a broken boss. She's really bad for close combat. Before you can swing, she dives into the water. Then he jumps over you for a long time and finally appears in the arena in a pile of whirlwinds, so you can't approach her. As soon as you come up, you swing, she dives again. Plus, there are oneshot water balls that can't be seen in combat. This boss is interesting, but requires serious fixes.
