The changes in 0.3.1 makes running unID maps a less viable option
TL;DR: Running maps unID used to be a viable strategy if you can handle random map mods, but 0.3.1 made it no longer the case as all maps must be identified and have 6 mods.
In theory, I think the changes in 0.3.1 detaching the tablets from towers is a good idea. Goodness knows I've seen my fair share of bad tower placements offering poor to no overlap at all. Not having to prowl the atlas looking for ideal towers and then pathing to them to ensure optimal number of untouched maps in the overlap radius sounds like a very promising change that is worth the small hit in bonuses from tablets. However, I hate that to get the most use of the tablets, you're required to run ID'd maps with 6 mods on them. I like running maps unID. Unlike PoE1, there are zero mods that completely brick builds (ex. reflect, no regen, no leech) in PoE2, so it's much more viable to run them unID. It means I have no idea what to expect when I'm running a map until it actually happens, and of course I'm not optimizing the value. The upside to running blind, however, is that you're allowed 6 portals per map and you get a small IIR bonus for it being unID. This isn't something I can do anymore with the new tablet system rework. In the past, I just needed to run the tower with a 6mod map in order to slot in the 3 tablets then proceed to run the others in its radius unID. Now they must all be identified with 6 mods in order to use all 3 tablet slots. The game is unnecessarily more punishing than it was in PoE 1. Imagine getting 1shot if you're playing any other build that doesn't use ES, and straight up losing the map after a single death. There's a reason so many builds are built around energy shield, and I feel like this weird endgame philosophy isn't helping. PoE players: Our game has a wide diversity of builds. Now they need to detach tablets from maps. Just make the implicit bonuses from map modifiers worth it.

" I'll be honest, the system GGG was using in PoE1 with scarabs and atlas passives worked just fine. They spent years improving the atlas only to bin the whole thing and start from scratch. This is fixing what isn't broken. PoE players: Our game has a wide diversity of builds.

Why would you ever want to run an unidentified map? Is there a benefit I'm not seeing? Would be a cool Atlas node if it was for inc rarity or something.
