Which support gems work with which skills?

How am I supposed to know which support gems work with which skills?

Some support gems look like its going to improve a certain skill a lot. Then it doesnt work with that skill.

This needs to be WAY more clear as support gems are not common (at least not in the early game where I am, campaign still, Act 4).

If you mouse over a skill gem on top of description you will see tags like spell, aoe, attack, fire and so on. Look for matching tags. Most of gems should work like that. Might be some exceptions like spell echo lineage

There are unfortunately a lot of exceptions, especially with gems-in-gems situations like turrets, cast-on x, etc.

The most reliable method is to pick up a support gem with your ability tray open and see which sockets glow. This at the very least tells you which holes you can stick your shiny thing in, but there are still a lot of opportunities to support skills with gems that have no practical impact.

It's lame. It's one of those situations where I'm happy to accept a little ambiguity or vague directions in text so I have to experiment and figure things out, but straight up red-x'ing a gem that can not only support an ability but is really powerful or green-checkin'ing one that has no impact on an ability is just actively confusing and misleading people there's not a whole lot of excuse for it.

maxroll.gg planner is allowing to use only valid support gems in given skill gem.
In-game is confusing af.
