The need to upgrade your gear
Hello,
I can understand that gear is an important part of the game and that upgrading your gear is what mainly is responsible for your sense of progression in this game, as well as the skill tree and getting through campaign towards late endgame. But what I find odd a bit is that in PoE 1, it doesn't seem as much the case as in PoE 2 that not upgrading your gear for a while will get you stuck. It seems to me the mobs die much faster in PoE 1 and as such I don't really have to pick up everything that is lying on the ground, looking through every single item in order to hopefully find something that is useful, creating this kind of effect that makes me think I'm playing a gambler's addiction simulation. No, in PoE 1 I can just zoom through the maps and be like: "Oh I haven't picked up flasks in a while. Here is one that is ten times better than what I currently have. Good thing I paid attention once in like 10 minutes". In PoE 2 it's more like: "I have to pick up every single yellow I see. Maybe it could be good for one of my characters, because if I don't do this, maybe I am not going to be able to progress with them." Now, in other posts I mentioned that I like the idea of being able to have some kind of mastery over this game and that the possibility of characters getting stuck excites me in this regard. I like the idea of a character not being able to progress, maybe far into level 30, 40 or 50, because I made wrong choices in items and build and now I am not able to find something quickly that will help me (except of course if I use the cheat code that is the trading website). But I think it's too harsh at the moment. PoE 1 feels less tedious in that I can also just glance at items and see that none of them have the gem slots I need for my build. I heard that they want to improve visual information on tier items or something along the lines. I still think PoE 1 gem slot system is better than PoE 2 tier system, because it makes you feel that you have to think about what kind of color fits to your build and see how many gemslots the item has and whether that might be more than your current item in that gearslot has. In PoE 2 that cognitive challenge is being dumbed down to: "High tier good, I like good". So, maybe it would be good to lower hp of mobs again, so I don't have to constantly go through items that I find on the ground. Which is very tedious, have I said that? But then, you know, balance some obviously overpowered skills like shield charge? I don't know. Just giving feedback. I'm not a designer. In kind regards Dernier bump le 23 juil. 2025 à 17:53:12

I think this feeling stems from the different philosophies behind the passive trees in the two games. In 2 they treat the tree as a multiplier of power, and gear as the baseline for power. In 1 the tree provides a lot of baseline power and defenses, as well as some multipliers.
I think they went the wrong way on 2 personally. Since everyone has access to the same tree, treating it as a baseline power provider would ensure everyone has a more consistent floor of power. Instead, because it's a multiplier, it multiplies the gap between bad gear and good gear, maximizing that harshness you're feeling. Maybe if really campaign crafting gets a bit better that will improve the floor experience enough. Though in my mind it still makes more sense for the tree to be baseline and the fear to be the multiplier, but I doubt they'll do a full reveal there. weird to see a complaint about the genre defying aspect of the game that was finally well executed. do people forget this is a loot based game? also you can get into maps with very and i mean very crappy gear, so this is also very well done on balance point at least in campaign.

" Well executed? There's ideal costumers for every game, i guess. |

the issue with loot is that we have few top tier builds...
and loot diversity is very very low because of that So, we need to check everything. If game was more balanced, things wouldnt be that way. Let just hope 0.3 gives more options, more usefull builds and gear so we can trade and be better to build our characters... |

They really make you Grind for Gear in the Game, eh?
They should have named their company after the concept so we would have known better. Maybe "Farming for Fragment Games"? "Loot Ladder Labs"? "The Time-Tax Treadmill Team"? "Pain for Pixels Studios"? I'm sure they could have come up with something. |
