Could someone provide details on Cast on Crit mechanics?

It works pretty fine on crowds as every like 2nd shot generates a new "Cast on Crit" proc (energy is generated like crazy).

But when it comes to a single target - it looks like it just does nothing, no energy is generated, no procs.

Does it require some pre-use manipulations (to start generating energy)? Am I just using it wrong (maybe some support gems block it for a single target)? I have 100+% crit and so confused.

More enemies = more hits = more crits

And part of the energy gain is related to the magnitude of the crits. So if an enemy has higher defenses (like a boss - normally single target as well) each crit generates less energy. (Only like 80% sure about this part, I know its true for cast on ignite/shock)

Is there a way to improve "Cast on Crit" for single target?
Like support gems, stacking crit magnitude (items? skill tree nodes?), anoints? Maybe boss fight preparation combos to better trigger cast on crit?


The question is more like - will it eventually work (for it to be useful during boss fights) or no matter what I do - skill rotation will have more effect rather than trying to invest into automated Cast on Crit mechanics?

To be more specific: I am trying to automate "Sniper's Mark" by using it via Cast on Crit. So far it looks like it will be easier to just use it as separate skill and not via Cast on Crit.
It will always have less effect with less hits happening.

There are 2 support gems that could help, one increases energy generated and the other gives a chance to refund some energy upon trigger. Theres also some passive tree nodes/jewels that help with energy. But can't think of anything specific for single target situations.

But that level of investment is probably not worth it for a debuff on the enemy.
