Can one improve Tangletongue fork even further?

I just wondered about the possible consequences of the wording "Forks critical hits" on the spear Tangletongue.

According to many sources this means that the critical hit rolls twice for crit chance, like lucky.
But instead of "just" increasing the effective crit chance, in case of a double crit result, the crit multiplier will be doubled too. In case of 100% crit chance and 400% crit multi this would result in all hits always hitting with 800% crit multi damage.

I hope i am correct so far.

Now for the interesting part: What if the characters projectiles fork into 3 projectiles?!

By using the two nodes of "Split Shot" (75%) and "Forking Projectiles" (25%) forked projectiles would create 3 projectiles instead of only 2.

In the before mentioned case (Tangletongue/100% crit chance/400% crit multi) wouldn't that result in dealing 1200% crit multi damage on every hit?

The tooltip on the "Forking critical hits" would suggest that not to work, since the wording there uses "either" and "both"...

I'm not sure why we're relying on what "many sources" say. The tooltip seems to make the interaction explicitly clear.

It's basically an enhanced version of lucky where if both rolls crit then you get double your multiplier. I don't know why they called it "Forking Crits" instead of "Extra Lucky" or something, it seems really confusing to borrow the word "fork" for something that is unrelated to the other very common meaning of this word in their game.

The sources are the wiki and forum entries, mostly referencing the same "either" and "both" wording.

There are two possibilities, either their wording for the ability is poor or they used that wording explicitly to show the difference to "normal" lucky together with the ability being connected to the fork mechanic.

I for my part feel that both of those possible early access errors are equally likely, therefor I try to find certainty.
Guys... Forking is when the projectile hits and makes an extra projectile from the impacted target....

There is a Fork Support gem

Green jewels also have a modifier that have 10-15 percent chance to fork an extra projectile when forking, so 2 more projectiles instead of 1...

The jewel is a good way to improve the forking even more.

I'm not sure what u guys are going on about. When you critical hit, it forks an extra projectile... That's all there is to that statement... Idk why u guys are doing all this unnecessary math and overthinking.

Improving fork means u want to increase the number of forks, and the only way to do that is with the Jewel

I'm sorry, but you're entirely wrong with what Fork means on Tangletongue. They are right in their thinking. Tangletongue does not fork on critical hit. It can potentially crit twice.
I am looking at trying this weapon, but having a hard time wrapping my head around how to make it work efficiently. What stats priority with this item? Do you want to augment forks and crit?

You want some critical chance to get to 100% then stack critical bonus damage.
Noted. My friend and I are playing this season with no guides just picking what we feel like will be fun and I'm doing fine, but I saw this weapon drop and he mentioned it is a big deal right now and i might want to give it a shot.
