Unable to use pick up key on gamepad

When playing on gamepad (xbox controller) I am suddenly unable to use my pick up key (bound to A button on gamepad). The (a) button also does not appear on the item hovers on the ground.

I am able to fix the issue by exiting to character selection and returning to game.
