Newcomers don't know they have to touch the altar to reclaim their ascendancy points

This is question that comes up regularly on Reddit's question thread: "I killed the trial boss, where is my ascendancy?"

Indeed I don't remember it being plainly explained at any point in the game. In the campaign, you get important boons from using quest items (skulls, books, congealed blood...), so I'm not surprised having to touch the altar doesn't come naturally to them. It is not what the game teaches.

Seems an easy and important thing to fix doesn't it...just put a flashing arrow over the altar pointing to it.

This would work, but I would rather the trial bosses drop quest items like "Secret of Time" / "Secret of Chaos" with a bit of lore in the description, and you use them to gain your ascendancy. It would be more coherent with the rest of the game.
Or remove trials completely and give 2 ascendency points at levels 30, 50, 70 and 90, or something like that. Especially with XP loss penalty.

I agree that it isn't clear to anyone unfamiliar with POE. I thought doing 10 rounds of the chaos trials awarded my 4th ascendency, not once did I ever think I needed 3 trial tokens which have vastly different drop rates and defeat the trial master for it.

I don't know why GGG added the most hated mechanics in POE aka chaos master and trap trials, made them much longer to do with even more convoluted mechanics as the cherry. A very very small fraction of the player base in POE 1 speed run trials for enchants unless this has changed? Not played POE 1 in ages as I cannot stomach doing the campaign for the millionth time.

I agree with OP +1001 but not having "trails" is the best solution imo.
dont you get a warning when you "try" to leave without taking the points?
