Lazy AF - CwC VD Poison Assassin

FORWARD:

I am a casual (read; lazy and unskilled) player who tries to make builds that require as little management as possible. I usually take posted builds and say "How can I make this easier to play." Managing flasks and moving into optimal position during major boss fights is fine, but for general mapping I like a button to move, and a button to kill monsters, and button mash flasks for the map boss. I think this build hits all of the marks of being easy to play while still capable of clearing at least some of the end game content.

Typically Volatile Dead (VD) Assassin is played with Cast on Crit (CoC), however, with the multitude of lingering area effects of Delirium and bosses, I like the ability to maintain damage output while kiting or evading. Poison allows damage scaling of VD without the use of the Scold's Bridle/Cast When Damage Taken mechanic.

I did not expect this build to do very well, but I have cleared Awakener 8, Uber Elder, and 20 Wave Simulacrum. I wouldn't recommend it over a well geared Impale Champion for all around clear and endgame, but I'm using it to grind out some of the challenges, and for that it work's great.

UPDATES/CHANGELOG:

OVERVIEW:

- This build utilises the fire variant of Volkuur's grasp to allow VD to poison. This is the only mechanically defining piece of equipment for the build. Everything else should be considered interchangeable, though I will try to make recommendations for anything I feel is BiS.

- I use both Desecrate and VD linked in the same CwC set up, along with spell cascade.

- Very good map clear (especially for dungeon tile set maps, since the VD orbs will track through doors into each little room). This plays like a cyclone build with extra AOE. Also very good for delirium content since the orbs will track monsters behind you so you don't need to backtrack.

- Build is not meant to tank damage, and any large hit will one shot you. I have several "Vile Reinvigoration" nodes that provide ES regen while mapping. This sustains recovery from any smaller hits, and is more than adequate provided I don't backtrack into some explosion. For bosses, I just circle around them until they expire.

- I used two sets of cluster jewels and went CI for no particular reason other than I already had some channeling jewels and ES body armor that worked for this build.

- As geared, this build is around 40-50 ex, however, I was levelling T14/T15 AW8 with a Martyr of Innocence, Infernal Mantle, and Praxis rings.

ASSASSIN:

- Natural selection with poison ascendancy nodes "Noxious Strike" and "Toxic Delivery". I'm not sure this build would work with any other ascendancy without the poison duration stacking. I did some mapping as a Trickster, which felt fine, but the single target didn't feel so good.

VIDEOS:
Might upload some videos, but this plays like any other CwC VD build.

GEAR:

Spoiler

This is what I was wearing for Uber Elder and Awakener 8 and what I paid for it, as best I remember.
-Staff: 7 ex linked with CwC and all rolls except Attack Speed/DD roll (exalt slam).
-Chest: 4 ex linked
-Helm, belt: 3 ex each
-Aul's: 4 ex
-Volkuur's with Despair CoH: 65c
Rings: 1 ex each
Watcher's Eye w/ ES GoH: 11 ex
AW Spell Cascade: 13 ex
Bottled Faith: Dropped (I would not buy one for this build and would use Atziris instead)

GEARING AND ALTERNATIVES:

Check POE.ninja for a good overview of gearing alternatives.

Spoiler
CHEST:

High ES, Spell Crit and resists. A cheap alternative is the Schoolgirl Cosplay. I bought a 6 link for 25c. The damage is actually better but since I am reserving all my mana, the additional spell damage taken is tough for the end game.

AMULET, HELM, BOOTS, BELT, RINGS:

AMULET: Aul's is fairly cheap this league and probably BiS with the 50% mana reservation saved. Impresence (Chaos) has Life, chaos damage, DoT, semi-free Despair. A well rolled Hunter amulet would also be good.

HELM: High ES and whatever else you need. I bought one with an open suffix so I could add Aspect of the Spider. I wanted to use the Fenumus' helm, but I was tight on resists.

RING: Im using the synthesis rings for the herald mana reduction. Since the spell damage for mark of the Shaper ring doesn't scale as well for poison, I think these are BiS.

BOOTS: For me, there is only Stampede for cyclone laziness. Of course any good ES boots or the Fenumus' boot for some ES on hit will work.

BELT: Crystal for pure ES. Bated Breath with a resist corruption, or Ascent from Flesh. HH would be fun, but I would need to somehow cap resists.

WEAPON:

A staff with a "Cast While Channelling" and "+ to Fire Spell Gems" or some strong chaos damage rolls will be a solid upgrade from Martyr of Innocence. I'm not investing in block, so the crit implicit is a better choice. Note that if I bought this unlinked, I would use the jeweller's orb method to get 4 green sockets so that I could run Deadly Ailments over Added Chaos Damage.

GLOVES:

Volkurr's for the fire to poison conversion. I paid 65c for one with Despair CoH. Temp Chains would also be good to offset the reduced poison duration of Volkurr's. Keep in mind that if you are using a Whitchfire Brew then you are getting a Free LV 21 despair (at least at close range).

FLASKS:

Coralito's for sure, and whatever else you want to fill in the gaps.

JEWELS:

These are the only two jewels I am using since I am running two cluster jwewel set ups. Im not sure how worth the ES GoH is considering we get 12% regen while mapping. Another alternative is the Malevolence increase ES recovery rate, which would probably be more consistent. I'm using this one because it was the cheapest one and also had the Malevolence DoT modifier. "Energy from Within" at the "Melding" node since I'm a little low on ES.

CLUSTER JEWELS:

I can't seem to link my cluster jewels, so here is a breakdown of the nodes:

- Unspeakable Gifts: Great for clear and bosses with adds or Metamorph (Large)
- Hex Breaker: Since I don't stop cycloning, its effective curse immunity.
- Precise Focus: A bunch of Crit and Crit Multi
- Enduring Focus: Free endurance charges to help with Phys mitigation
- Circling Oblivion: Probably the highest DPS node from the ailment duration increase
- Vile Reinvigoration: The DoT damage and ES regen easily make up for the slightly less ES (6% vs 10%) of a comparable node.

GEMS:

Soulrend - Controlled Destruction - GMP - Void Manipulation - Swift Affliction - Empower/ES Leech

- I used GMP full time. I like not having to worry about aiming or the boss moving away from a projectile. Since there is no DoT penalty for GMP, I don't feel the need to boss swap gems.

If you are running a bow:

Soulrend - Controlled Destruction - GMP - Void Manipulation - Swift Affliction - Empower

With a bow, I ran my wither totems in my chest before experimenting with Essence Drain. I liked the totems for the most part because I knew when bosses were done phasing when the totems would start casting. If I had any interest in leveling further I would also consider getting another curse from the tree and adding "Curse on Hit" and "Enfeeble". Again, I was using ED for Uber Elder since it was the one fight where it seemed they were not alive long enough to apply stacks. If you are not using an Impresence, you could use Bane here to apply your curses.

I also like Wither over Blight. The coverage is just better, especially with mobile bosses.

Helm:

-I think Malevolence is an obvious choice, and then whatever you can work in your build depending on your other gears. Again, with the mana reservation cuts, I could get 2x 50% Auras with AotS as long as I use a +3 Enlighten.

The only other links i am using are
-CWDT and Immortal call
-Blasphemy and Despair
-Flame Dash and Faster Casting

PASSIVES, ASCENDANCY, PANTHEON, and BANDITS:

Spoiler
Passives:

Spoiler
Passive Tree Highlights:

Since I played this specific set-up on Soft Core, I went for the 3 non-ailment clusters near Shadow, "Method to the Madness", "Growth and Decay", and "Atrophy." This should be enough DPS to carry through the story mode. I grabbed EB after that. I generally skip jewel sockets until I can afford getting something worth 2 passive points.

Ascendancy:

Spoiler
I went Patient Reaper for early DPS and Life Recovery, then Ghost Dance and Escape Artist for defense. Last is Prolonged Pain.

Pantheon:

Spoiler
I went with "Arakali" and "Soul of Shakari" for one more immunity with poison.

Bandits:

Spoiler
I went with Kraiyton. I wanted the Move Speed and Attack Dodge.

GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS and SIDE NOTES:

Spoiler

Assuming I have ES:
- With just the "Grace" Aura I get 49% Evade. With flasks I get to 66%
- Base Dodge chance with Acro and Phase Acro is 43% Attack, 50% Spell (Phase Acro + Escape Artist)
- With Vaal Grace (+30% Dodge), Dodge Chance is capped
