Synergizing Skill Gems

I really thought that the synergies of skills in D2 were really interesting but were kind of under-developed because they limited how you built your character, rather then give you options for unique skill paths while optimizing your effectiveness it shoved a specific skill tree down your throat and made hybrid or different builds much weaker to the point where you couldn't even finish the game with them.
Maybe something like combination skills or special effects/auras when possessing a specific combination of leveled up skill gems or having them equipped (probably just having them equipped for balancing issues i.e. people carrying hundreds of level 1 skill gems to super charge their abilities.) In D2 it just seemed like the skills were too linear and forced you to follow specific paths, because there weren't enough syngergies. There's support gems and they are a pretty good example of synergies but they don't do anything but change your current skill item. It would open up a lot more possibilities if having two skill gems equipped could open up things like extra skills, sort of like skill combination with similar but different effects. I would be really stoked to see some kind of elemental gems system, like adding certain types of elemental attributes to our weapons, that would be totally boss. lolz :P

" It kind of looked as though there was some kind of element to some of the marauders attacks. I'd like to see something like that play into a steroid gem with an elemental attack gem to create an enchant skill, if there is some kind of synergy system. Well, IMO skill synergies in D2 was a necessity because otherwise the skill tree would have sucked too much.
Since PoE doesn't have inherently better and worse skills and it's all just about the level I don't think synergies are needed anymore. It could however be interesting to to introduce something like this. They could put every skill in a number of schools and give you a slight bonus dependent on the number and levels of other skills in that school. A "summon zombie" skill would belong to "Summoning" and "Necromancy" schools. While a "summon elemental" skill would belong to "Summoning" and "Elementarism" or something like that. If you had both equipped you'd get a slight bonus because they share a school. Cannot run out of time! There is infinite time...

" Yeah that's what I said, it discouraged experimenting with your skills because the synergies were necessary in order to not get pulverized by hell level monsters, but they were designed as a necessity rather then a luxury, which could benefit to producing truly unique ways to play and builds to use. That's why I said it was under-developed, because it limited the game rather then expand it. |
