MoM and Eldritch Battery interaction

I played trapper a couple of leagues ago and I was pretty damn sure that if I had both of these up, enemy hits would take away from mana, not ES. But then again, I'm the kind of guy who cant remember what he ate for breakfast so maybe I'm just remembering this wrong.
Anyway. Now, when I get hit it takes away from ES and my mana just sits there doing nothing the entire time. You could say "well its obvious its gonna take away from ES since you have battery" but if thats the case, then why does mana reservation take from mana and not ES? Eldritch Battery has two effects:
Energy Shield protects Mana instead of Life. This means that if you take damage to your Mana (such as with Mind over Matter), your Energy Shield will absorb that damage. Spend Energy Shield before Mana for Skill Costs. This means that if you use a skill that has a Mana cost, you will use ES to pay that cost if possible. Do DoTs count as damage because I stood in some poison cloud earlier and for the first time since I set up this build, I saw my mana go down

I guess its better this way. With tinkerskin, I regain both life and ES, and with the free mana that I have left over, I can just run a blasphemy curse
