is lowering texture quality suppose to help not lag?

First of all my laptop is a potato

At the moment, i am using direct 11 with all the graphic set on low and the game does have lag spikes sometimes but it doesnt get me killed.
SO i decide to change the texture quality to 8 just to see if it would make my game more smooth. It only works when i change direct 11 to direct 9ex.
But i dont understand why my game lags even worst and takes forever to load when im on direct 9ex with texture quality to 8.
can anyone explain this to me?
why did my game get worst when i lower the quality?

As a general rule, DirectX 11 should be more efficient and generally preferable.

Lowering the texture quality will reduce the amount of VRAM the game requires. Other than using up less of your card's memory it wouldn't really be expected to impact performance. Different settings do different things; some are CPU-heavy, some are GPU-heavy, textures are kind of neither. Your graphics card wouldn't be able to do more just because some memory isn't used.

The game isn't running worse because you're using lower settings. It's running worse because you started using an older and less efficient graphics API. The texture change didn't matter.

Is your laptop connected to your modem wirelessly? Path of Exile is a server-side game. I'd be inclined to wonder whether your lag spikes might be a networking problem rather than an FPS one. If you want to test whether that's the case, here's a guide you can read.

Laptop is connected wirelessly and that guide you gave me. I try it. I enter the host addresses, mines is Washington DC and i click start, nothing pops up. So i dont know whats up with that.

Could you link us to a screenshot of the program on Imgur?

when i encounter the unique boss at the bath house, the Hector unique boss, my screen will always freeze for like 2 seconds and then lag extremely badly until i kill the boss, this does not happen to any other unique bosses

do you know why?

You need to use the latest version of WinMTR which is v0.92, the one you're using doesn't work properly.

That’s very strange.

I’ll try to look into this sometime tomorrow - I can think of a few things, but I’m not really confident in any of them.
