wild strike's secondary effect

If your looking at a skill like Wild Strike, which converts physical damage to elemental damage, shouldn't controlled destruction effect the damage? I was wondering because no matter what spell type gem I link, the damage tool tip does not change. Same with Point Blank. I know Wild Strike has a projectile tag, yet when I add a projectile gem with a damage mod it does nothing at all to the tool top damage. So how is one suppose to know what if at all, if these support gems are actually effective?

Wild Strike is an Attack, not a Spell. It doesn't have a Spell tag for a reason :p

1. Point Blank only applies to Projectiles - the tooltip lists the Melee strike
2. Only the ice Projectiles are affected
3. Point Blank never has an effect on listed Damage

--------
The secondary effects deal Attack Damage (by default, Phys + 60% Conversion); note the absence of the Melee tag. Each Element then adds one modifier to that pool: Fire - AoE, Lightning - Chaining, Cold - Projectile.

Anything that affects all Phys/Ele Attack Damage applies to all variations of Wild Strike; Weapon Elemental Damage, for example.
Melee Physical Damage will only apply to the Melee strike (and thus will show on the tooltip), Point Blank only applies to the Cold effect, etcetera.

controlled destruction forks with spells only, wild strike is an attack (including secondary effects). Only one of the secondary effects unleashes projectile, so Id not say that focusing on projectile damage is a way to go

tooltip only shows damage of initial melee hit

So point blank does then effect wild strike's cold effect? Would Iron Grip then also effect it? And is there any way to figure out the damage increases? It makes for a really annoying skill if things effect the damage but you can't actually tell how much.

Both of those work, it's a projectile attack so anything that affects projectile attacks will work, it's just not worth using projectile bonuses for the skill.

Sure, you can calculate how much dps your secondary effects will be doing, how much elbow grease are you willing to spread?
Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

Well the skill gems no, but perhaps the keystones would.

On a secondary note, I've tested the poison skill gem with wild strike and it looks to work with everything. So could I then consider bleeding to also work? As in making things at range bleed from the secondary attack, because I know poison will work.

Yeah, poison will work and suck pretty badly as it's based only on physical damage you dealt, same with bleed. If you have a bleed weapon any hit you do with it will cause bleed, however if you meant those 'bleed on melee hit' passives they will work only on initial hit.
