Whirling Blades worth it to level up?

I have a double dagger crit frost shadow that uses whirling blades to escape. Since I only use it as an escape tool, I did not level the gem past level 1. I was just wondering if the damage of this skill is worth it to level so that it won't be just an escape tool. What types of support gems do you usually link with it?
Putting life on hit on it for good measure further helps with survivability. You get the 'on hit' from all monsters hit, so if you have to dash through a pack of mobs, you can sustain yourself better.
The only time I level up WB is when I plan to really focus on it: weapon elemental damage supports, crit chance, attack speed. The works.

Otherwise it's my mobility skill and the damage doesn't matter -- dismiss level up button and never think about it again. :)
And they said *I* was bad at PoE. At least I made it out of act 1 and know how to use the /dnd function. El oh fucking el.

I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period.
Thanks for the suggestions. Although I will eventually try the on-hit for life idea, I will stick with Charan's suggestion for the meantime. Thanks! ^_^
Hi, 61 duelist here

I use whirling blades as my go to aoe skill but I link it with these support gems: blind, increased melee damage, and life on it

I will link more once I get the sockets to support it, its awesome survivability, the dmg is mediocre compared to lightning strike and such(mostly because melee is weak compared to ranged ATM).

I liked Whirling Blades for spamming life on hit with, but it seems like one of those skills that caused massive desync for me; and it got a little annoying.
