Spell Damage Protection - Why are tree options so limited? What about two-handed builds?
So I'm curious to know how people feel about the current methods of spell damage protection. Aside from Phase Acrobatics, they're extremely gear dependent (Cloak of Defiance, Incandescent Heart, Atziri's Step) and block-centric (Rathpith, Lazhwar, Rainbowstride, Rumi's, Saffell's). Does this seem like a problem to anyone else? If you aren't on the right side of the tree, if you play self-found (although that one goes without saying), or if you don't take block nodes, you're at a disadvantage. Two-handed non-staff builds really get the shaft.
The old tree that had +2 max resists in one node (Elemental Adaptation) made a lot of sense. The right side of the tree had Phase Acrobatics, the left side of the tree had boosted resistance. Also at that time, the Marauder could get a decent amount of life, and that made up for limited protection from spell damage on the left side of the tree. Plus back then we could run auras more easily, so people actually used Purity auras regularly without losing out on dps. But now the situation seems bad... I especially have a hard time seeing why anyone would play a two-handed build that can't block. Am I missing something, or are things out of whack? Is there another big change coming in 1.3 that will make things better? Edit: Nope. Bows were pretty meh before 1.2, now they're OP. Who knows what they have in store for 1.3. They might add implicit spell block to 2H lol

I think you've somehow got the idea that we're not supposed to take damage.

Why is it always self founders are "getting the shaft" in these threads? In rampgae I killed atziri and full cleared apex on two characters, I bought exactly one piece of gear between the two of them, and crafted a piece that ended up better by the time I killed Atziri on that character anyway. Neither was max block, One did use cloak, which I found and five linked myself( three times that league actually I 5 linked a cloak) the other relied on dps(SRS) and actually avoiding damage( move out of flameblast/lighting storms). Try and use resists, they are your friend. You actually take very little spell damage if you cap resists(just the 75 cap, not saffels or anything although yes my incinerator was 100% fire res with flask) and use resist flasks/granite/jade(if your IR) to take ele or physical spell damage. Life leech/regen are your friends as well.

" I didn't want to make this about self-found, I was just listing a side effect of making spell protection so gear dependent. " Using these tips, which is pretty much all you have as a zero block two-handed build on the left side of the tree, puts you at a disadvantage compared to someone who can use Phase Acrobatics or block chance in addition to your tips. " Bows were very powerful even in 1.1. At least, good enough to kill uber. For try, for see, and for know.

" Yes, but it's always been that way. PoE is designed around trading and GGG prioritizes that aspect of the game over many others. You have to adapt and limit yourself to either builds that work self-found or play Standard/HC in the knowledge that it may take you years to get build-enabling uniques. If neither appeals to you, this is not the game for you. I don't mean this in a polemical way. It's just how I see it and what I believe is necessary to enjoy the game if you don't want to trade. | |
I dont know why they removed elemental adaption 2% BFD - lame change. But u can get 100% resists still.
75% base cap 23 purities + aura buffs and inner force = 8% flask with flask nodes = 13% Saffels = 4% = 100% = immune to elemental cept penetration mobs like atziri. But yeah armor suck ass. First of all it needs to protect vs phys more second there should be nodes like 1% max resits for 10,000 armor. And bring back elemental adaptation. Git R Dun!
